Abstract
The elastic anisotropy (C22 - C11) of Ba2NaNb5O15, which has been measured by Brillouin scattering, is shown to increase from room-temperature to the 300 °C ferroelastic transition. This behaviour demonstrates that the order parameter characterizing the transition is distinct from the spontaneous strain. The ferroelastic transition is of the improper type.
